After reading Deathly Hallows I finally understood the Malfoy family. Lucius made a bad choice and joined Voldemort as a Deatheater, and when the Dark Lord rose again, he had no choice but to follow him along with the rest of his family. If he was a true Deatheater and hadn’t regretted his decision he wouldn’t be afraid of Voldemort. Narcissa and him were true Slytherins: looking out for their own, doing the best they could to protect each other and their son, given the situation.
