People who complain about Gryffindor winning the House Cup in the first book seem to conveniently forget the fact that Draco Malfoy single-handedly lost Gryffindor 150 points because he ratted on Harry and Hermione when they were trying to get a dragon out of the country. Gryffindor deserved the cup far more than Slytherin did.

I think Dumbledore recognized that.
